Last Days of Summer

When I left off the story of our road trip, we had just arrived in Minnesota. That was over a month ago, and somehow I just never got around to writing about the rest of the trip. And then it seemed like too much time had gone by, and I avoided my blog like I do when I get writer’s block and don’t know where to start. But now we are only TEN DAYS!!!!!!! away from staging/orientation for Peace Corps, and I feel like I should wrap up our summertime adventures before I start writing about Macedonia. I’m hoping to post more frequently after we leave, and I’m usually better about blogging when I’m abroad, but we’ll see. Continue reading “Last Days of Summer”

All the Travels

August is here! And this is the first time I’ve been actually able to sit down and write, or have wanted to take a break from life to write, because that’s just how awesome the last two months have been. Consequently, this is going to be a really long post, so hang in there. Continue reading “All the Travels”

Life is Beautiful and Wonderful and Lovely

So many incredible things have been happening in my life lately. I’m almost afraid to talk about them, like if I mention it too much the universe will realize it screwed up and all of the good will dissolve around me. At the same time, it feels like I have been working so hard for a long time and I’m finally seeing the result of all of the effort, which felt like it took so much longer than it should have to appear. Bloom

It’s spring again! It’s finally here! Every winter, I feel like I forget what it’s like to be warm. It honestly feels like it’s going to be winter forever, and as a person who hates winter and everything to do with coldness, it is a depressing time of year. And then, in what feels like an overnight change of heart, just when I can’t bear it for one more day, the world warms up 30 degrees and all of the trees burst into flowers and I fall in love with DC all over again. Asparagus Season

One of my favorite books to read at the beginning of the year is Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. She and her family move from Arizona to a farm in rural Virginia with the goal of either growing or locally sourcing all of their food for the year. With such a huge undertaking, they have a hard time deciding when to actually begin; when to stop doing things the easy way because that’s how you’ve always gotten by, and it’s how everyone you know gets by, and bite the bullet to do something difficult but worthwhile. For the last half of last year, this is kind of how Kyle and I felt. We were feeling the nagging urge that something had to change, but what and how and when were all up in the air. Last time we felt this way, we moved to Thailand. Thailand was amazing and wonderful and enriching in so many ways, but it always kind of felt like a stopgap. This time our change needed to feel more substantial.

So we applied to the Peace Corps. Continue reading “Asparagus Season”

Catching Up

Man, life has really gotten away from me in the last six months. I had such big plans! This was going to be the year of All Figured Out, “settling down”, feeling like a real adult. And in March I really did think it was all going to go that way. But as I sit writing this, thinking about the last few months… that’s not quite the way things have turned out. 1940’s Dixie Dresser Restoration

1940’s Dixie Dresser Restoration

When we got this dresser from a woman on Craigslist, we thought we’d totally scored; it had good bones, a ton of character, and we’d never seen anything with such a unique shape.  Of course, it was also in rough condition.  She’d painted it black, and not done a very good job of it.  The paint was cracking and peeling, large chunks of the veneer were missing, and she’d even painted straight over what turned out to be the original hardware.  After finding a manufacturer’s mark for Dixie on the inside of one of the drawers, I took to Google to figure out exactly what we had on our hands.  As it turned out, this double-bowed dresser was actually a valuable piece from the 1940’s.

Such a huge transformation!
